John Sanday Associates Pvt. Ltd (JSA) formerly known as John Sanday Consultants Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 1985 to meet the needs of appropriate design for construction in Nepal. The company's conservation vision was born out of John Sanday's long-standing involvement with the conservation and repair of Nepal's traditional and historic architecture. The vision broadened to encompass architectural design, seismic engineering and maintenance projects.
JSA, a Nepalese registered company with foreign and local partners, incorporates a team of both Nepalese and expatriate architects and engineers dedicated to the creation and maintenance of a harmonious environment.
Throughout the fast changing region of South Asia there is a growing awareness for the urgent need to conserve or reclaim environmental quality and cultural identity while still moving towards national development. JSA views each project in its full social, environmental and cultural context. Whether addressing the needs of urban commercial clients, rural institutional development or cultural heritage conservation, JSA's approach is to frame the client's requirements within the larger perspective before individual solutions are developed.
What We Do
Architectural & Engineering
Design and supervision of new buildings, according to western codes and adhering to local bye-laws. JSA has a proven track record in problem analysis, design of solutions, communication and implementation.
Cultural Heritage Conservation
Conservation of the built Heritage and Community planning in urban or rural environment. Comprehensive documentation, traditional material science, and sensitive structural stabilization.
Construction & Maintenance
JSA maintains in-house construction and maintenance capability. JSA can offer the full services of an architectural, engineering and cultural heritage conservation practice which will undertake projects from design inception through to building completion; services include all aspects of engineering (including seismic specialization), seismic as well as all the stages of project development for cultural heritage activities. Our clients range from government, international agencies, religious trusts to private clients.
Our Design Principles
Design Program
It is our practice to make a carefully determined program brief in consort with the client. We would suggest that after nomination as Architect we would review the program and the site conditions closely with the client. JSA is equipped and proficient with design and communication by in-house email and computerized systems.
Structural Design
Besides the above seismic concerns the desires for economy maximizing spans and adhering to appropriate codes and standards determine our structural design. In general because the National Building Code of Nepal is in process of finalization all structural design work is done as per the National Building Code of India with incorporation of British and American standards.
Seismic Design
Nepal has a seismically sensitive environment and therefore all architectural designs and building activity should be conducted with strict adherence to prevailing seismic principles as set by the National Building Code of India.
